"Who Is" Project

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

A fun get-to-know-you project that is great for kicking off a first meeting.

Learning Outcome:

Learning more about one another and establishing a foundation as a program/club. Talk about why everyone is participating in the club in the first place as well as the importance of working together as a group of young girls! Overall, understanding that we are all powerful women who want to make a difference!

Materials:

  1. Who Was/Is books (can be checked out from local library)

  2. (Optional) Graphic organizers to write about the woman they choose (see example)

  3. White paper for drafting and planning

  4. Poster Board for final poster

  5. Markers and other art supplies for decoration

Project Run-Time: 1-2 Meetings

note: run-time depends on extent and chosen approach to the given project. In this example, the project may be modified by choosing not to use graphic organizers and simply having the girls skim the books for inspiration, thus completing the project in a day. Alternatively, an entire meeting can be used for reading, graphic organizers, and discussion while a second meeting could be used for poster-board creation and presentation.

Step #1:

All girls chose a “Who Is” or “Who Was” book to read about a strong historical or modern-day woman. Initially, the girls just read their book and filled out a couple of simple graphic organizers about the women who they chose. We discussed some of their cool findings as well as who this woman was/is and why she was/is important before jumping into creating our posters.

Step #2:

Next, we had the girls create a “Who Is” poster about themselves to highlight their own personal stories, accomplishments, and characteristics. In order to create this poster, they drew a picture of themselves and answered the following questions:

  • What do you love most about yourself? Why?

  • What do you love to do?

  • What/who inspires you. Why?

  • What is something that you’re really good at?

  • What is one goal you have for yourself?

  • How can you change the world?

  • How do you want to change the world?

Step #3:

Finally, after the girls had created their posters, we gave them the option to present their finished products and talk a little bit about their strengths as young women.
