Speech Writing

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

A project built on the watching, understanding, and learning from strong female speeches.

Learning Outcome: Understanding the importance of communicating through speeches and how powerful our words can be when presented to large audiences. Also, understanding the logistics behind presentation skills and techniques that help persuade a audience.

Materials:

  1. Graphic organizers for planning and speech writing (linked below)

  2. Computer or other electronic device to share videos!

Project Run-Time: 1 Meeting

Step #1:

Show the girls a variety of speeches from strong women and discuss what they notice. What issues are these women talking about? Why are these issues important? How do these issues effects the girls? The world? Below are the speeches previously used for the project and the accompanying discussion questions to help spur conversation:

Speeches:

note: recommended times do not have to be strictly followed! These speeches are amazing, and you may want to highlight different aspects or watch more/less of them based on your individual program.

Linked Discussion Questions:

Step #2:

Next, have the girls begin to plan out their own speech by brainstorming issues and topics that they are passionate about. The topic they choose will be what they draft their speech about.

Passion Graphic Organizer:

Step #3:

Once the girls have chosen a topic, have them fill out a graphic organizer that helps lay out how their speech would be organized. Make sure they include a hook at the beginning that draws people in, as well as a bow at the end to tie everything up nicely.

Speech Layout Worksheet:

Step #4:

Have the girls share! They do not need to necessarily write an entire speech (they're welcome to if they please) but rather get an understanding for the structure of speechwriting as well as the importance of choosing an issue or topic they're passionate about. They can share their topic as well as graphic organizer in small groups or as a whole club.
