Entrepreneur Project

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

A dedicated, hands on multi-step project.

Learning Outcome:

Exploring possible career pathways while also expressing creativity through simple architecture-creation, learning more about the jobs girls wish to pursue, and being introduced to real-life female entrepreneurs.

Materials

  • Pre-prepared folder with organized questions/planning paper inside (see below)

  • Computer or other electronic means to share videos

  • Art supplies for decoration

Project Run Time: 1-2 Meetings

Note: Meeting spread depends on how far you want to build on certain aspects of the project. Discussions and sharing can be elongated or shortened, girls may want more time to collaborate and finish businesses, etc. etc.

Step #1:

Introduce the girls to some real-life female entrepreneurs! A great way to do this is through snippets of Ted Talks, speeches, pieces of articles, or simply through discussion. Below are some possible links used by program leaders in the past to get your creative juices flowing:

Websites/Blog Articles:

  1. How She Did It -- A great resource and website to explore by The Female Entrepreneur Association. https://femaleentrepreneurassociation.com/how-she-did-it/

  2. Get to Know the Female Entrepreneurs Who Are Reshaping the Business World -- https://www.entrepreneur.com/slideshow/339393

  3. A female entrepreneur’s advice for women looking to start their own business -- https://www.theladders.com/career-advice/a-female-entrepreneurs-advice-for-women-looking-to-start-their-own-business

Ted Talks:

  1. Musimbi Kanyoro -- To Solve the World's Biggest Problems, Invest in Women and Girls https://www.ted.com/talks/musimbi_kanyoro_to_solve_the_world_s_biggest_problems_invest_in_women_and_girls

  2. Leila Hoteit -- Lessons on Success from an Arab Business Woman https://www.ted.com/talks/leila_hoteit_3_lessons_on_success_from_an_arab_businesswoman

Here is some other fun content to check out and relate to business ventures:

  1. "Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog -- Creates an interesting discussion about Tiana's dream of opening her own restaurant and her hard work leading up to her goal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irEBOfv4Ug4

Step #2:

Introduce the girls to the project and give them their folder of worksheets. Below is the attached format previously used in a google drive. The girls worked individually or in groups to go through and create their own business.

Step #3:

Finally, have the girls share! Give them an opportunity to share as a club or in small groups what they created and what they learned about starting their own business.
