Examining Leadership Skills

Updated: Dec 20, 2020

A discussion and slide-show based project that involves an interactive project.

Learning Outcome: Discussing leadership skills and brainstorming what a leader looks like, acts like, and how the girls can be leaders in their own lives. Also, using the information and conversations from the discussion and powerpoint to apply what they've learned to an interactive and fun activity.

Materials:

  1. Talking piece (for example a ball to pass around during the discussion so each girl can have an opportunity to speak uninterrupted)

  2. Hula hoop for the activity

Project Run-Time: 1 Meeting

note: estimated times from previous project are 20-30 minutes for the slideshow/discussions and 15-25 minutes for the game.

Step #1:

Gather the girls in a large group around the presentation. With each question, have the girls give their answers and discuss. In order to make this process more entertaining, we had the girls pass a ball to each other while sharing answers. Document/track the conversation by writing their answers on the board!

Step #2:

After discussing the first set of questions, it is time for the game! Have the girls stand in a circle and hold hands. Start the hula hoop on someone’s arm and see if they can pass the hula hoop around the circle without dropping hands. If time allows, divide the group into two teams and see who can do it the fastest to add some competition.

Step #3:

Once the game is done gather the girls back in a circle and brainstorm what skills they had to use and what skills they felt they used well.
